To the Editor: Regarding "10 Travel Web Sites Worth Bookmarking" (Frugal Traveler, Oct. 9), in those dimly remembered pre-Internet days, those of us without travel agency travel budgets used guidebooks. Actual printed books! My favorites in the 1980s were the "Let's Go" guides, which I used in traveling across the United States as well as in Western Europe. As for the semester I spent in Moscow, it was mostly about word of mouth: students who'd been there before shared names and phone numbers of their trusted Russian friends with those of us going for the first time. These precious contacts usually proved to be incredibly hospitable and generous with their time, food and patience with our halting language skills.

To the Editor: I love reading expat blogs. Whenever I am going somewhere new, I set up Google alerts for blogs. Fun reading!

To the Editor: I do appreciate being able to reserve flights and hotels online, and I will also use online maps and train timetables to get information, yet I also value not knowing everywhere I want to go and eat in advance. I love discovering things on my own, as well as getting tips from locals.
