The Amway Grand Plaza hotel in Grand Rapids, Mich., has fine dining, a spa with an extensive menu and glamorous meeting halls. But more guests are choosing a simple package that covers the room, a $40 breakfast credit and parking for $179.
"Year to date, the bed-and-breakfast package makes up 21 percent of all our packages," said Nick Griffioen, director of revenue management for the Amway Hotel Collection. "That's an 8 percent increase."
Demand for bare-bones packages are inching up elsewhere. The Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Fla., home to fancy restaurants and a golf course, says that its $154 bed-and-breakfast deal has made up 65 percent of its package bookings since January. And the Casa Magna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, right, says that its $103 Sand Dollar package, which adds a fourth night free and a daily $50 resort credit, totals 65 percent of all package bookings. Mr. Griffioen has a simple theory on the deals' success: "People can pay one rate, and they know that everything is taken care of."
