AHOY MATE

For cruisers who've already ticked Alaska or the Mediterranean off their bucket lists, what's next? As more and more ships head toward the Southern Hemisphere, the answer has become obvious — Australia. Luxury and mass-market cruise lines have heavily invested in the region: Crystal Cruises and Holland America upped their passenger capacity on Australian cruises by 25 percent; Royal Caribbean scheduled 54 sailings on three ships this year; and Seabourn (The Odyssey is above) is sailing there all summer long for the first time. Even Carnival, which typically keeps its fleet closer to the Caribbean, has deployed the Carnival Spirit Down Under. The surge can be attributed to the strength of the local economy — some lines are even trying to attract Aussies by setting up on-board barbies and serving flat whites.

Companies are targeting every corner of the continent. Orion specializes in the Kimberley region, with a cruise that explores Aboriginal rock art at Raft Point and the Bungle Bungle sandstone landform in Purnululu National Park. Celebrity now sails to Queensland, the northeastern state that abounds with adventure options, like ocean rafting around reef lagoons and crocodile safaris on the Proserpine River. And Cunard's circumnavigation cruises pass through many iconic sites — the wine country around Adelaide, the beaches of the Whitsunday Islands and the port at Sydney Harbor.

ANCHORS (FAR) AWAY

Cruise lines are pulling into ever more unusual ports of call, redrawing routes and kicking off shore excursions at the far corners of the earth.

LITHUANIA

The medieval port city of Klaipeda, Lithuania, is an offbeat new addition to Oceania's Baltic itinerary. Points of interest: whimsical public sculptures, a frescoed Orthodox church and the Svyturys brewery, whose lagers pair well with local rye bread and potato dumplings.

SRI LANKA

Silversea's tour to Kandy, Sri Lanka, commences with a seaplane ride over high-altitude hills and moves on to a visit to the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), where the Buddha's upper canine is kept in a gem-encrusted case.

INDONESIA

The Maluku archipelago in Indonesia is known by some as the "Forgotten Islands" — but not by Orion Expedition, which dedicated a whole cruise to them. Professional photographers instruct passengers on how best to document the rich traditions of maritime cultures.
