In Transit Blog: Mine, All Mine: Ski Areas Rent Whole Mountains

Having a private ski mountain seems the stuff of ski-bum fantasy. But for little more than the price of a daily lift ticket (if overall cost is divided equally), a few ski areas offer the chance for skiers to act like king (or queen) of the mountain for the day.

This winter, Anthony Lakes, a 50-year-old ski area in northeast Oregon began offering its Own the Mountain option. On any non-holiday Monday through March, a group of up to 50 skiers can rent the entire 1,100-acre mountain. The $4,000 cost includes five hours of lift service, lunch at the base lodge and grooming on two of the 21 runs open for skiing.

Turner Mountain (right) in northwest Montana can be rented privately once a week, for $3,000, on Mondays through Thursdays (except for holidays). "Most groups rent on Thursday, hoping for a powder day if it snows early in the week," said the ski area spokesman, Bruce Zwang. One lift accesses 22 runs, half of them rated expert.

And at Sugarbush Resort in Vermont, the Lincoln Limo Sno-Cat can be rented for a day of private cat skiing on Mount Ellen, a part of the ski area, in April. The $1,800 fee for up to 12 people includes ski guides and a barbecue lunch.
