Tumbling down the side of a wooded hill in East Pittsburgh and settling into an increasingly lively swath of Penn Avenue, Garfield is a once-blighted neighborhood in transition. The area's development is evident in its buildings, both residential and commercial: ornate graffiti adorn the exposed facades of 90-year-old brick structures that abut modern mixed-use condominiums and public art, creating a sort of street collage. At night, indie music aficionados attend gallery rock shows amid dilapidated houses being rebuilt and energy-efficient rent-to-own units sprouting up in vacant lots.
