Cab riders in New York City seeking a wheelchair-accessible taxi have recently begun hailing them virtually, using a service called Accessible Dispatch.
The service, owned by the Connecticut-based company Metro Taxi, allows riders to order one of New York's 233 wheelchair-accessible cabs by placing a call, sending a text, using a smartphone app or going online to accessibledispatch.com.
In the past, finding a wheelchair-friendly cab amid the more than 13,000 medallion cabs "was like hitting the Powerball," said William Scalzi, president of Metro Taxi.
Rides must start in Manhattan but may go anywhere in the five boroughs, Westchester and Nassau Counties and Newark Liberty International Airport. Riders pay the fare from pickup to destination. (The fare from the taxi's location to passenger pickup is covered through taxi medallion revenue.) In its first three months, Accessible Dispatch has averaged 35 calls each day with typical response time of 20 minutes.
