Lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered luggage is a perennial headache for many air travelers, but 2012 was a good year. The nation's 15 largest airlines reported the lowest annual rate of mishandled baggage in 25 years. The carriers posted an average rate of 3.09 reports of mishandled baggage per 1,000 passengers, the lowest rate since this data was first reported in September 1987, according to a recent Air Travel Consumer Report issued by the Department of Transportation. The carriers with the best rates last year were Virgin America, AirTran Airways and JetBlue Airways.
