A wave of change is coursing through the French city of Nantes, bringing cool new eateries, hotels and culture.
Nantes has broken the Madame Bovary curse that's turned so many other French provincial towns into snoozevilles. The city, recently named Europe's green capital by the European Union, is now a popular weekend destination for eco-conscious Parisians who have been lured by the fresh air and a raft of exciting new hotels, restaurants and cultural spaces. Much of the activity is centered around the old docklands along the Loire, now home to effortlessly hip restaurants like L'Uni (36 rue Fouré), an adventurous modern bistro, and Les Bouteilles (11 rue de Bel Air), easily the city's best wine bar, with plenty of Loire Valley vintages. Among the new hotels is the 28-room Sozo (doubles from about $140), built inside a 19th-century chapel with barrel-vaulted ceilings and original stained-glass windows. Best of all is Le Lieu Unique, a magnificent belle époque structure that was once an LU biscuit factory and is now a cultural center complete with a bar, a bookstore, a design shop and even a Moroccan-style hammam.
