In Transit Blog: Air Canada Enters the Leisure Market

Air Canada's new, competitively priced leisure service, Air Canada Rouge, flew its first legs on Monday. The airline celebrated Canada Day and its first flights with trips from Toronto to Jamaica and Costa Rica.

Rouge passengers will fly in two types of aircraft: the Airbus A319, which seats 142, and the larger Boeing 767-300 ER, which has 246 seats, 18 of them premium at the front of the cabin. The smaller planes will take vacationers to Caribbean destinations like Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, while the larger planes will fly routes to Venice and Edinburgh.

Rouge won't be banking solely on its pricing to compete in the leisure travel market, which is dominated in Canada by airlines like Sunwing and WestJet.

The airline offers perks for passengers like complimentary meals and nonalcoholic drinks on flights to Europe and what it has described as a "generous" checked and carry-on bag policy.

Rouge's rewards program is being integrated with the Air Canada Altitude and Aeroplan rewards programs.

Flights will feature the Air Canada Rouge Player, an updated in-flight entertainment service that streams content to traveler's laptops and various Apple devices; $5 gets a passenger unlimited access, but the streaming is free until Aug. 1.
