Energy-conscious travelers may soon find the Dutch island of Aruba high on their list of destinations. The island has announced that it is on track to become the first sustainable energy economy in the world.
A wind turbine farm built in 2009 currently supplies 20 percent of the island's energy, and a second wind farm, which would double the sustainable energy provided, is in progress. Aruba's prime minister, Mike Eman, teamed with the Carbon War Room, an organization started by the entrepreneur Richard Branson that is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions worldwide, in 2012. Together they've set the goal of running on 100 percent renewable energy by 2020.
What makes the Caribbean island a perfect place for experimenting with renewable energy options are the same things that make it an attractive vacation destination. The constant supply of sunshine, ocean currents and a strong breeze allow are optimal for testing options to reduce Aruba's carbon footprint.
Dedicated eco-tourists may already have had Aruba in mind. The 70-square-mile island's hospitality industry has been working to provide green options for travelers. EarthCheck, an organization that complies with a number of international standards to ensure energy sustainability at tourist destinations, certifies six resorts on the island. Eight more properties are working toward achieving the accreditation.
