Aspiring undersea adventurers can visit a new tropical coral reef exhibit on Boston's waterfront.

The New England Aquarium officially reopened its Giant Ocean Tank in early July after a 10-month, $17 million renovation. The four-story coral reef, home to 140 species and more than 2,000 aquatic animals, was designed to help visitors "experience the Caribbean as it was before the arrival of Columbus," in the words of the museum.

New elements include: windows lowered to help toddlers better see the sharks, eels and other aquatic life swim by; a platform where select visitors can feed and interact with the aquarium's 560-pound green sea turtle and other animals during programs; a glass railing to enhance viewing of predators swimming high up in the water column; a lighting system that adjusts to create the underwater ambience at different times of day and in different weather conditions; and improved accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers.

Two new exhibits are also part of the renovation. The seven-tank Yawkey Coral Reef Center showcases lesser-known animals resting on its bottom that are often difficult to see. The Blue Planet Action Center details the aquarium's marine conservation and research efforts and features a lobster lab, shark nursery and seven-foot-high educational touch screens about endangered species.
