Hotel room minibars are traditionally stocked with overpriced and uninspired drinks and snacks and tend to be an amenity that many guests turn to only as a last resort. Today, however, minibars may be evolving into a welcome addition to rooms — many properties are beginning to fill them with locally sourced or personalized items.
The Home Ranch, a Relais & Châteaux property in Colorado, for example, has free local cheeses and crackers and a bottomless jar of freshly baked cookies in its minibars. The JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa in Hawaii has created an online shop that lets guests pick from local beers, Maui-style chips and other bites to create a personalized minibar, and the Fairmont Kea Lani, also in Hawaii, has introduced a service called "Fill Your Fridge"; guests work with the concierge before arrival to select items for their bars. The St. Regis Bal Harbour in Florida, above, recently introduced customized minifridges as part of a larger wellness program that will include the option of stocking them with everything from a juice cleanse to gluten-free goodies. And then there's the Fairmont Chateau Whistler in Canada, which leaves its minifridges empty so guests can fill them with their own snacks.
