An app that narrates while you drive, the new, free TravelStorysGPS allows users to listen to audio bites regarding local history, wildlife and geology in Wyoming's Jackson Hole area and Grand Teton National Park.
As motorists drive, the GPS-linked app triggers mini-podcasts about sights en route. The two narrated drives available include the trip between Jackson and its western Idaho border over Teton Pass on Highway 22, and between Jackson neighbor Moose, Wyo., and northern Teton National Park on Teton Park Road.
Listeners can select channels devoted to wildlife, history or kids. Information dispensed ranges from ecology (the recovery of once-endangered bald eagles) and storytelling (how cowboys herded cattle over Teton Pass) to trivia (one-third of the potatoes grown in the United States come from Idaho). The children's channel introduces cowboy lingo, Native American lore and quizzes.
Should the GPS link fail, the app includes the written script for designated readers.
