As bike-friendly cities and bike share programs proliferate, the hospitality industry is doing its part to encourage two-wheel travel. Earlier this month Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants began a bike program in partnership with Public bikes. All 60 Kimpton hotel properties nationwide offer guests complimentary use of bicycles.
The two San Francisco-based companies worked together to create a fleet of custom three-speed European-inspired street cruisers that feature cherry-red frames with orange and blue accents, cream tires, matching double-walled rims, brass bells and rear baskets.
Guests at all properties can purchase picnic baskets with fare created by Kimpton hotel restaurant chefs and featuring locally sourced goodies in three themes: light and healthy, romantic shareables, and local flair.
Some properties have special offerings. Hotel Monaco in Washington, D.C., features free Bike with the GM programs. On Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., for example, guests can take a spin with the general manger on scenic tours of the city's monuments and historic sites or join him for rides along the Potomac River or through Rock Creek Park.
In Santa Barbara, Calif., the Canary Hotel's Urban Wine Trail package provides wine and cheese on arrival, and maps with discounts to local urban tasting rooms for self-guided exploration. Prices for the package start at $385 and include deluxe room accommodations.
