T Magazine: Feeling For | An Old-School Hotel in the Berkshires That’s Perfect for Just Staying Put

Sure, it's fun to traverse a city in 36 hours or explore some far-flung land over a luxurious two weeks. But when it comes to vacations, sometimes it's nice to just pick a spot and stay put. If that's what you're in the mood for, the Wheatleigh Hotel, in Lenox, Mass. is the place for you. It's not new, or of the moment, or even remotely cool, and that's exactly the point.

Built in 1893 by a wealthy financier as a wedding gift to his daughter, the estate, modeled after a 16th-century Florentine palazzo, is nestled on 22 picturesque acres in the Berkshires. Architects Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown renovated the 19-room hotel in 2011, and clearly took future guests into thoughtful consideration. The suites are sprawling, with private terraces overlooking landscaped grounds originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted; the tubs are clawfoot; and the beds are just soft and stately enough to make you never want to get up. (Of course, if you do, there's plenty in the area to see: Tanglewood is a five-minute walk away, while Jacob's Pillow and MASS MoCA are within a 45-minute drive.) But what really makes this hotel so attractive is all the special services on offer. Want an outdoor massage under the evergreens? A picnic made up for an outdoor concert? A five-course dinner on your balcony? Private yoga in your room? All can be arranged, and should.

On a recent weekend getaway to the Wheatleigh, my husband and I made all sorts of plans while making the three-hour drive up from New York. We followed through on none of them — didn't even take a dip in the secluded circular-shaped pool in the woods. Saturday night, we finally decided to venture out for dinner to Bell & Anchor, a newish restaurant in Great Barrington by Mark Firth, a founder of the Brooklyn hipster foodie mecca Diner. But after a few glasses of rosé on the lawn, as the sun began to set, we heard a violin begin to play. A guest had surprised his wife with a private concert on their terrace for the evening. We took one look at each other, and decided to order room service, served al fresco on silver platters to the distant sounds of Mozart. We were in bed by 10.
