Rare is the Orlando hotel that doesn't openly appeal to Disney-bound travelers. But the new Alfond Inn in suburban Winter Park, Fla., offers an interesting alternative.
The newly built Spanish Mediterranean-style boutique hotel is owned by Rollins College, a private liberal arts school in Winter Park. Net operating income from the 112-room hotel will finance the school's new scholars' program, granting scholarships and financial aid. Profits will flow into the fund for 25 years, or until it reaches $50 million, whichever comes later.
Other than the financial link, management says the college tie is behind the scenes. More visible are gracious features including Arts-and-Crafts inspired woodwork in the guestrooms, a glass-domed conservatory and a 60-foot rooftop pool. A farm table, exposed beams and wood floors underscore the focus of the inn's farm-to-table restaurant, Hamilton's Kitchen.
Rooms start at $99 through Sept. 30, and from $159 thereafter.
