In Transit Blog: In the Keys, in the Air

The newest way to see the Florida Keys is from the open cockpit of an antique airplane. Overseas Aero Tours began flight-seeing tours last spring in a World War II- vintage biplane.

Built in 1940, the Waco UPF-7 features capacity for two passengers, plus the pilot, and flies at about 500 feet in search of regularly visible rays and sharks, along with the occasional dolphin, turtle and manatee. At up to 1,500 feet, passengers get the broader view of the area's unique bridges and islands.

"From the air you really see how Henry Flagler changed the neighborhood," said the pilot and co-owner Brad Neat, referring to the railroad magnate who built the original 1912 railroad linking the Keys via a series of bridges, later replaced by the Overseas Highway. "Plus it's really cool seeing how little land and how much water there is around here," he said.

Tours depart from the airport on Marathon in the Middle Keys and start at $110 for two for 10 minutes, going up to $599 for an hour.
