Harnessing the majestic power of nature, artists and designers fashion exotic worlds that are as devoted to fantasy as they are to flora.

STRANGE PARADISE
A look inside the many varieties of verdant landscapes created by artists and designers. More…
Horticultural edens nourish the intellect as much as they delight the senses, but their magic comes from more than just soothing arbors and romantic allées. Gardens created by artists are often filled with ideas intended to surprise, and provoke moral and philosophical themes that are as important as the verdurous landscape. In his Scottish sylvan utopia, the late poet Ian Hamilton Finlay cultivated visual allusions that ranged from pre-Socratic philosophy to the violent battles of World War II. The artist Tomás Saraceno's balloon-like biospheres, some inhabited by plants, are conceived as idealized floating environments for a new generation.
Bringing the marvel of an exotic garden indoors has long been a preoccupation among designers. Raf Simons has taken up Christian Dior's fixation with flowers in his work for Dior, transforming his catwalks into pathways through lavish fantasy-fueled nurseries. The porcelain sculptures of the young Japanese ceramicist Hitomi Hosono are reminiscent of outlandish plants.
The garden — a botanists canvas — represents our strong urge to tame nature, and by doing so, to beautify and personalize our surroundings both outside and inside the home.
