Q&A: Navigating Art Fairs in Miami and Beyond

Written By Unknown on Senin, 02 Desember 2013 | 17.35

As Nick Korniloff, director of Art Miami, put it, "It's going to be hard not to run into an art fair."

Below are edited excerpts from a conversation with Mr. Korniloff, who gives the lay of the land in Miami next week as well as his take on some fairs abroad.

Q. Can you describe the scene in Miami next week?

A. So much is going on from the minute you arrive in Miami. Seven miles from the airport you have the Wynwood Art District, where Art Miami and other fairs are taking place. Then on the beach, you have Art Basel Miami Beach and Aqua at Aqua Hotel, which is 47 hotel rooms transformed into galleries for young, emergent talent. That's great because you're experiencing a true Art Deco hotel with a whole different vibe from some of the different shows. And this year you have the opening of the new PĂ©rez Art Museum Miami in an amazing new facility.

The city is bustling with dealers, collectors, press, celebrities. It's really exciting to have access to works of art in one concentrated area. This is seeing international artists, from the top all the way down to the young, struggling artist.

Any recommendations for navigating the fairs?

The Miami Herald and other publications down here give a ton of information, as do all of the websites of the art fairs. Read the notes on the fair's history, what type of art is being shown there, who the galleries are, which artists they represent, so you can decide which fit your tastes. The sites give practical information too: hours of operation, routes for shuttle buses, dates for V.I.P. parties and after events.

Print up the floor plan before you arrive and wear comfortable shoes. Experience all of the lounges and amenities. Look at the educational programming. Some fairs have talks on site like "Investing in Art" or "How to Start a Collection" or tours in private collections and institutions hosted by top curators. When you go to these events, you meet other people from around the world. Socially and culturally, it's a 10.

Any tips for snagging a hotel room?

The occupancy levels are high next week, but not as high as Presidents' Day weekend, so there are plenty of hotel rooms weeks in advance. Many dealers, if they have to house staff, rent homes through Airbnb. Our travel agent is Universal Travel, and Turon Travel specializes in booking hotel rooms for the major international art fairs.

Any art fairs abroad you like?

My favorite is Tefaf Maastricht — the European Fine Art Fair in the Netherlands. It offers the very best of the market, from classical to contemporary: antiquities, old masters, Impressionist paintings, flatware, couture jewelry, photography. The experience of being there is fantastic. It's surreal when you're walking through cobbled streets at night with flame-lit lanterns throughout Maastricht, and you can get on a train and be in Germany or Belgium in 40 minutes' time.

ARCO, Madrid's International Contemporary Art Fair — I'm a big fan of that, too, for all of the same reasons. Fairs usually start around noon and go until 6 or 7 p.m., so in the morning, you take the train to cities like Segovia or the countryside and be back in the afternoon for the fair.

I also love the Biennale des Antiquaires. It's a great city, as we all know, but there's something really romantic about the Grand Palais, which sits right along the river. Structurally, it's glass domes with intricate framing and this green patina on the inside. The natural lighting makes the works look so much better. What do we have to compare that to? The Javits Center?

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 30, 2013

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of an event taking place at the Grand Palais in Paris.  It is the Biennale des Antiquaires, not the Biennale de Paris.
