Medomak Family Camp in Washington, Me., always accommodates campers who have nut allergies, but this year it's offering a special nut-free week, June 22 to 28.
The idea came from the parent of a child with nut allergies, said the camp director David Brunner. "She told me, 'It's really hard for us and very anxiety-producing. Anything you can do to help would be great.' It was kind of a no-brainer for us," he said.
Because "Nut-Allergy Friendly Week" will be held the first week camp is open, the facility, already cleaned from the previous season, will be cleaned again of any possible nut contaminants before opening.
All food prepared and served in kitchen and dining facilities will be nut free and any processed foods will be checked for nuts and will carry labels indicating they are nut free and haven't been produced in facilities that process or pack nuts.
Otherwise during the week, the century-old camp, located on a lake in Midcoast Maine, will conduct fun as usual, with adults and children participating in activities such as canoeing, archery, fishing, arts and crafts, and campfires.
Weekly rates are $895 for adults; $740, children 5 to 12; and $635, children 2 to 4; which covers lodging, activities and food (including one nut-free lobster dinner).
