T Magazine: Travel Diary | Aurora Hunters

Rafael de Cárdenas, a Manhattan-based architect with a coveted furniture line who has also designed interiors for the likes of Nike and Baccarat, and Robert Storey, a London-based set designer/art director whose client list has included Victoria Beckham and British Vogue, have been in each other's lives for about three years. And though their creative careers might suggest that they mostly collaborate professionally, it's actually the classic bond of friendship that ties the two together.

Earlier this year, a New York Times article on the Alaskan northern lights inspired de Cárdenas to see the phenomenon for himself. But instead of venturing to Alaska, he organized a trip to the northernmost town in Sweden, called Kiruna, also home to the elusive aurora borealis (and, no doubt, a wealth of design inspiration). When Storey caught wind of his friend's plans, he inserted himself into them, and the two embarked on their own "northern lights safari," as they're calling it. They returned last week after several days of snowmobiling, checking into a hotel made of ice, marveling at huskies and hunting auroras. Here, the duo share their personal photos from the vacation.
