Most safari camps in Africa either don't allow young children or they don't cater to their interests, but the New York- and Hong Kong-based outfitter Asia to Africa Safaris is offering a new family-friendly animal viewing trip.
The seven-day getaway begins with three nights in Cape Town and includes excursions to the top of Table Mountain and a tour of the Cape Town Peninsula to see the colony of African penguins and the Cape Point Lighthouse.
The next three nights are at Madikwe Game Reserve, a four-hour drive north of Johannesburg.
Parents and their children stay in the family suite, which has a private plunge pool, and can enjoy twice-daily family game drives.
In addition, children can participate in the junior ranger program, which includes activities like finding their direction in the bush, making a fire, studying animal tracks, identifying different wildlife and baking pizza and desserts.
"A safari is a special experience, and we wanted kids to be able to partake in it in a way that's fun and educational," said Edwin Gayla, the company's managing partner in New York.
Prices start at $2,300 a person for the week, which includes all internal flights and transfers.
