In Transit Blog: For Hotel Guests, a Key and an Airport Lounge

Airport lounges have long been a way for airlines to offer exclusive waiting areas for elite-class travelers; now a few hotels are entering the game.

The Four Seasons Lana'i has a branded lounge in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Island Air's commuter terminal, for guests to enjoy snacks, nonalcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi and courtesy iPads while they wait for their connecting flight — at no extra cost.

"Guests can even get their room key in advance and make dinner or activity reservations with the concierge," said Charles Fisher, the Lana'i property's resort manager. The 1,000-square-foot lounge accommodates 30 people and is accessible on arrival and departure.

A 185-square-foot Four Seasons lounge at the Amman, Jordan, Terminal 1 baggage claim allows hotel guests to relax while they wait for luggage; preference is given to those who book the Meet and Assist package. The Westin Langkawi Resort and Spa Airport Lounge in Malaysia at the departures terminal serves light refreshments created by hotel chefs (access is free for all Westin guests; amenities are free for Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum and Gold members).

"The arrival and departure experience is under-tapped within the hospitality industry," Mr. Fisher said, adding that the lounges ensure that the first experience before visitors step onto the property is true to the brand.

Some hotels have partnerships with established lounges. Rosewood Resort's Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, offers access to the airport's V.I.P. departures lounge where travelers can select a hotel meal that can be packaged to enjoy in-flight through a resort program called LVPAir (fees apply). "This is a way for us to continue to think about the guest experience even after they've checked out," said the resort's manager, Daniel Howard Scott.

Tyler Dikman, chief executive of LoungeBuddy, a free app with data on over 1,500 lounges across 480 global airports, there has been a recent rise in the number of hotels offering lounges at airports, including pop-up versions. Because of the prohibitively expensive nature of airport real estate, "hotels are more likely to offer airport lounge access by partnering with existing versions," he said.
