A popular destination on the North Carolina coastline dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured sea turtles has relocated, expanded and reopened to the public.
For the past two decades, the volunteer-run Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center had operated out of an 850-square-foot building to care for stranded hatchlings and older turtles with infections and injuries from boat propellers, hooks and nets.
With the move to a new 13,600-square-foot facility in Surf City, the hospital is able to treat more turtles and allow more visitors to see the work done there. Turtles being tended to include loggerheads, leatherbacks, ridleys and green sea turtles, which arrive on the coast each summer to mate, nest and battle natural and human-made threats. The tours take the public behind the scenes where the turtles are cared for, fed and exercised. A favorite stop is the observation deck, where guests get a view of the turtles and peer through windows into Sea Turtle Sick Bay, the intensive care unit. Turtle releases, when center volunteers return rehabilitated patients back into the Atlantic Ocean, are also open to the public.
A few hours north, in Manteo, the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island has opened its new Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center in conjunction with the local Network for Endangered Sea Turtles. The 3,000-square-foot center, which will be open for tours, includes holding tanks for recuperating turtles, food preparation and storage space, and a medical treatment room.
