Many hotels are offering guests the chance to improve their "point and shoot" game through classes with professional photographers.

Joe McNally will lead a weeklong workshop in September at Anse Chastanet/Jade Mountain in St. Lucia, in which he will focus on camera skills, lighting language and compositional techniques, including taking guests into the jungle. "With digital photography, critiquing is instantaneous," he said, "and what we're trying to do is to ramp up the participants' level of sophistication on how they capture life."

The wildlife photographer Steve Winter, who leads one of the new three-night trips offered by the Banyan Tree Mayakoba Resort in Mexico, said his immersive experiences will focus on photojournalism (rates from $2,499, double occupancy).

Some hotel classes focus solely on the smartphone. Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa offers an Artful Photography With Your Camera Phone lesson on which guests learn about ambient light and composition techniques in the Sonoran desert ($35 for a 90-minute session). And with "selfies" now a certifiable phenomenon, the Muse Hotel in New York has a Selfie Scavenger Hunt that includes a kit with whimsical items for participants to wear as they snap self-portraits in front of city landmarks (the hunt is free to guests and includes a lesson; room rates from $299).

There are pricier versions. The Leica store in Washington, D.C., has partnered with the city's Capella hotel to offer a $50,000 package that comes with four cameras and tutorials with two professional photographers and a family portrait session.

Many hotels are offering photography-related activities because the nature of vacations is changing.

Scott Mead, who teaches at Maui's Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, said that guests often want to brush up on their hobbies between beach time and mai tais. He offers advice on the latest photo apps as well as DSLR techniques ($50 per person for a two-hour class). He said the lessons help guests artfully preserve holiday moments. "For some it's about capturing that mystical look of a wave," he said. "For others it's getting a macro shot of a plumeria."
