For avid cruisers, having insufficient time to more thoroughly experience a destination is a frequent complaint. Several cruise lines have stepped up to meet this growing demand by offering longer stays at ports of call.

Tauck's new 14-day river cruise on the Seine, with stops in Versailles and London, comes with two full port days in Paris. Jennifer Tombaugh, the company president, said that the decision to offer such generous anchor time in a "crown jewel destination" was based on consumer feedback.

"This additional time allows us to offer enriching experiences such as bringing local artisans on board or offering always-valued choices of sightseeing," she said in an e-mail interview. The 2014 journey is already sold out; 2015 rates start from $6,990.

Silversea has amplified docking time in its 2014-2015 itineraries with two full days in cities like Sorrento, Bordeaux, Barcelona and Monte Carlo, up from full-day stays offered previously. Its 115-day 2015 World Cruise includes several two-day stays in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Cape Town.

While overnights are de rigeur for destination-focused cruise lines like Windstar and Azamara Club Cruises, some brands are exceeding land time expectations by a wide margin.

Oceania recently announced two 180-day cruises in 2015 — the longest in the industry — with many three-day sojourns in cities like Yangon, Myanmar; Shanghai; and Singapore (rates from $42,000). Kunal S. Kamlani, the Oceania president, said that the longer stays help guests feel less rushed and more immersed in the local art, culture and cuisine.

Christine Duffy, president and chief executive of Cruise Lines International Association, noted that more members have started to offer this type of arrangement instead of the usual sunset sail away because it allows for the evening action to shift to the local area. "Passengers note that it's a less touristy way of sampling a destination," she said.
