The urge to get behind the wheel of a fantasy vehicle has driven everything from Indy car racing schools to vintage convertible rentals. Now one Minnesota outfitter militarizes the dream with a Russian tank for rent.
Drive a Tank, which bills itself as the only place in the country to recreationally drive military tanks, has added a Russian-designed T-55AM Main Battle Tank, nicknamed Red Dawn, to its fleet of seven armored vehicles.
"It was the evil Russian tank of the cold war generation," said Drive a Tank owner Tony Borglum, who also owns a bigger, American-issue Chieftain Main Battle Tank. "If the cold war had erupted, these two would have met," he said.
History buffs, military families and lovers of heavy equipment are among Drive a Tank customers who have signed up to pilot these and other tanks on about 20 acres in Kasota, Minn., roughly 70 miles southwest of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Packages range from simply riding in vehicles like the British-made Abbot Self-Propelled Gun for $310 to driving four different tanks — including using one to crush a car — and shooting five different guns for $2,499.
