In Transit Blog: A Campaign to Make Route 66 Hip Once More

What better way to revitalize a stretch of Route 66, the historic highway stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles, than with a filling station and a motor-court cottage? The city of Springfield, Mo., has plans to turn both into the visitors' center of a new roadside park it is building as part of an effort to help bring new life to run-down areas of the 12-mile stretch of highway that runs through the city.

Springfield is known as the birthplace of Route 66.

Last week Springfield's City Council allocated $100,000 to begin construction plans for the park, but most of the park's features, including the refurbished filling station/visitors' center, commemorative art, decorative gateways on the road, historic signs and a picnic area, will come from funds raised piecemeal through crowd-sourcing campaigns organized by CrowdIt, an online group based in Springfield.

Cora Scott, Springfield's director of public information and civic engagement, said the larger goal is to draw tour groups and new businesses to the area. But for now, "we're starting small," she said. "A few blocks at a time."

The first push begins Wednesday, with a launch party and a 66-day online campaign to recreate the sign outside of Red's, a popular roadside restaurant from 1947 until it closed in 1984, and whose owners, Sheldon "Red" Chaney and his wife, Julia, were fixtures of the community. The cafe, famous for its giant hamburgers, is believed to have had one of the first drive-through windows in the United States. The sign, which read "Giant Hamburg," is rumored to have been measured incorrectly, leaving insufficient room for the full name of its signature dish.
