Fashion is often inspired by faraway places, but this season, designers seem less interested in the destination than in the journey itself.

The Constant Traveler
The fall 2013 runway was awash in looks inspired by wanderlust and the culture and places it has begotten. More…
Most of us have an untraveled adventure that we carry inside ourselves, a longing to escape the everyday. Wanderlust is the physical manifestation of that spiritual unsettledness, a desire to leave oneself behind in order to find another. Few of us, though, have the sense of greater destiny to embark on such a quest. In 1891, Paul Gauguin, the French painter, famously did it, leaving behind his family in Copenhagen to sail to French Polynesia to flee everything that was, according to him, "artificial and conventional." In 1990, at the age of 22, Christopher McCandless abandoned suburban Virginia and later ventured into the Alaskan wild for a journey that would eventually cost him his life.
Exotic and far-flung locales have long informed fashion designers, but the fall 2013 runway seemed inspired by wanderlust itself. Whereas Valentino's Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli showed embroidered dresses fit for a Chinese empress, Ann Demeulemeester conceived a group of elegant wayfarers complete with layered long waistcoats and sturdy walking boots. Bruce Chatwin, the British travel writer who spent six months touring Patagonia in 1974, said that a single journey could be viewed as a metaphor for life because it has a beginning, middle and end. The constant traveler, however, finds himself more at peace in the places that he passes through, and in the very act of moving, than where he settles.
