In Transit Blog: Airbnb Adds 'Experience' As a Rental Filter Choice

Airbnb, which started as a vacation rental site, has sought to expand its mission with add-ons like meetups, activities meant to broaden its appeal to an audience just as interested in a curated travel experience as they are in bargain accommodations.

The site has made another step toward experiential travel with Airbnb Neighborhoods, a new feature that allows users to sort vacation rentals by filters like "Trendy," "Great Transit" and "Artsy" in seven cities, including Paris, San Francisco and Berlin.

The filter tool is in step with the company's strategy, said Brian Chesky, co-founder and chief executive. "Airbnb is changing the way people travel. Now you can ask yourself what kind of experience do I want to have rather than say where should I go."

In New York, users who go to the Neighborhoods page and choose "Dining" will call up areas like the West Village (above) and the East Village. Adding "Peace & Quiet" narrows the field to the more tranquil West Village. Each neighborhood has a Web page that displays available rental listings along with large, color-rich photos of its streets and tag lines like "a certain European mystique permeates the West Village."
