T Magazine: In London, a Sanctum for Single Malts

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 13 Desember 2012 | 17.35

Signature cocktails need to go. And no one seems to feel this sentiment as acutely as the whiskey aficionados and connoisseurs who belong to London's new Soho Whisky Club. Besides its fabulous whiskey, the club's finest quality is its semisecret location in a lofty annex above one of London's oldest and finest single-malt retailers, the Vintage House on Old Compton Street. This downstairs shop carries over 1,800 pours and is the envy of single-malt collectors, offering hard-to-find tipples like a 70-year-old Mortlach (just $30,400). The attitude of the upstairs whiskey club seems to be along the lines of: Why read a description of our whiskies when you can have them in a glass? And for a $320 annual membership fee, members enjoy privacy, free monthly tastings and a choice from over 300 single malts, from the delightfully drinkable to the rare reserves. Among the special 2012 bottles the club currently recommends are the Port Ellen 32 year old ($956), a peppery pour with an almost muddy coal finish, and Auchroisk 30 year ($367), which tastes of banana, charred fruitcake and orange peel.

Soho Whisky Club, 42 Old Compton Street, London; 011-44-020-7018-1168.

This post has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: December 13, 2012

The name of a 70-year-old whiskey was misspelled in an earlier version of this post. It is spelled Mortlach, not Morlach.
