The last cinematic adventure featuring Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (left to right) hit movie theaters nearly two years ago, and bookshelves nearly six. Since then, though, pilgrimages and gatherings of wizards have grown on both sides of the Atlantic. Soon they'll be joined by fans congregating in the Pacific.
Recently Princess Cruises announced that it would hold a Wizard Cruise along California's coast in November, in partnership with Whimsic Alley, a Los Angeles-based store that resembles the fictional wizard street Diagon Alley. Stan Goldin, the shop's owner, said that activities aboard the four-night cruise, the first of its kind, will include treasure hunts, movie marathons and quidditch excursions. "It's heavily cosplay," he said, using shorthand for costume play.
The juxtaposition of hundreds of Potter fans in black wizard robes brandishing magic wands under a bright, blue and distinctly un-English sky is not without precedent. In 2010, Universal Studios opened the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Fla., and is at work on another theme park in Hollywood.
In a more appropriate atmosphere, Britain has set about immortalizing authentic Potter sites. Leavesden Studios, where the movies were shot, opened to the public last year, and the newly refurbished King's Cross Station in London recently unveiled a sign that says "Platform 9 3/4" marking the secret platform where Harry boards his train to Hogwarts.
Regardless of what fans may learn on the Wizard Cruise, it seems they have already mastered breathing new life into a saga whose end had already been mourned.
