Earlier this week, the TV personalities and James Beard Award-winning chefs Aarón Sánchez and John Besh headed to Haiti on behalf of Oxfam's GROW program, which seeks to promote sustainable practices for food production around the world. While there, they checked out urban gardens in Port-au-Prince, and new rice-growing techniques that require less water in the countryside. They also made headlines when they were turned away from a farmers market by a mayor who feared they would take unflattering pictures. In between their various activities, the duo — who happen to be best friends and are planning to open a Mexican restaurant together — cooked up local dishes alongside Haitian chefs, farmers and culinary students. Here, Sánchez and Besh share their adventures.
