T Magazine: Itinerary | Joshua Tree’s Artful Excursions

Whether or not you can score a personal invite to the sculptor and designer Alma Allen's home and studio in Joshua Tree, Calif., the desert respite offers plenty of other sources of art, culture and inspiration (and makes for an ideal escape from the nearby madness that is the Coachella festival). Here, a few highlights.

The American sculptor Alma Allen has taken the long road from the sidewalks of SoHo to the desert of Joshua Tree to art stardom. More…

AROUND TOWN

High Desert Test Sites
Joshua Tree's first port of call for the art-minded visitor is this nonprofit organization's office and gift shop. Co-founded by the artist Andrea Zittel in 2002, HDTS hosts workshops, events and an array of site-specific art projects in the desert, which are listed on its website alongside updates on affiliated events — such as a ramen feast served outdoors during last month's full moon.

A-Z West
Zittel's home and studio, on 35 acres next to Joshua Tree National Park, offers public tours four times a year. Also on site are a shipping container compound and Zittel's installation, Regenerating Field. One 10-acre parcel, featuring Sarah Vanderlip's "Untitled" sculpture made of two truck heads welded together, is open to the public year-round (directions are on the High Desert Test Sites site).

Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum
The artist Noah Purifoy was a leader in the Los Angeles assemblage movement and the founding director of the Watts Towers Arts Center; his outdoor art museum, created in 1989, has been supported since his death by the efforts of Ed Ruscha and other art-world luminaries. Visitors can roam freely through the 10-acre landscape to view works incorporating materials such as bowling balls, charred wood and old car parts.

BKB Ceramics
The ceramic artist Brian Bosworth sells his hand-formed vessels in a courtyard shop adjacent to High Desert Test Sites HQ; he's also currently hosting a pop-up across the highway that sells a small selection of jewelry and clothing from independent L.A. designers.

Red Arrow Gallery
This space, which also has a branch in Nashville, hosts emerging-artist exhibitions at its own storefront on Route 62 as well as art crawls out in the surrounding desert. Its civic-minded curator, the artist Rhonda Lane Coleman, organizes tours of private artists' studios, including her own.

Art Queen
The artist Shari Elf's work ranges from mixed-material portraits to songwriting, singing and knitting. Her quirky installation spaces on Joshua Tree's main drag, organized under the "Art Queen" umbrella, include a "museum" devoted to crochet and Americana-tinged works displayed in an airstream and an old photo-processing booth.

Joshua Tree Highlands Houses
These modern cabins, spectacularly situated near the National Park's entrance, each boast five private acres and are available to rent by the night, week or month. Artists can also live and work in them via the Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency, which accepts applications each March for a six-week summer stay.

Mojave Sands
Visiting art-world types loll about the pool at this rustic, five-room midcentury boutique hotel. A film and music production studio shares the premises.

TO THE WEST

The Integratron
This wooden dome structure — built by an engineer and UFO enthusiast who claimed its design was inspired by Moses' Tabernacle, the writings of Nikola Tesla and telepathic directions from Venusian extraterrestrials — offers what might be the world's most intense "sound bath." Visitors lie on the floor while listening to the music of crystal bowls amplified by the space's unique acoustics; the process purportedly awakens the body's energy centers, or chakras.

Sky Village Swap Meet
Hunt for buried treasure, people-watch and check out Bob's Crystal Cave, the owner's must-be-seen-to-be-understood art installation.

Pappy & Harriet's
No guide to Joshua Tree would be complete without a shout-out to this watering hole in Pioneertown — a defunct stage set for old Hollywood Westerns that has become a lone oasis in the area's nightlife desert. It's a charming, down-home spot to eat, drink and listen to indoor and outdoor musical performances, sometimes by famous acts (the Pixies play there April 17). You may even spot a famous artist or two sipping beers at the bar.

TO THE EAST

Amboy Crater National Natural Landmark
Drive northeast of Joshua Tree through Wonder Valley — where you'll pass homemade pyramid structures and a vast salt mine — to reach this dormant volcano strewn with sculptural black lava rocks. It's a feast for the eyes, beloved by artists both local and non-.
Entrance on Route 66 just west of Amboy Road, Wonder Valley, Calif.

The Palms Restaurant and Saloon
Post-crater pilgrimage, make a pit stop at this Lynchian roadhouse to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon, shoot pool and peruse the on-premises Wonderland bookstore. Sunday brunch is worth the trip, too.
83131 Amboy Rd, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
