With growing legalization of same-sex marriage it was just a matter of time before gay couples got the travel pitch for destination weddings. Now the W Retreat & Spa-Vieques Island has a partnership with the same-sex wedding specialist Bernadette Coveney Smith, founder of the planning service 14 Stories, to offer destination wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples at the oceanfront resort on the Puerto Rican island.
Aimed at couples in the East, the package includes a legal marriage ceremony in New York or Boston, followed by the resort event. Priced from $12,500, the arrangement includes 45 hours of planning, a personalized wedding Web site, a prewedding tasting with Ms. Coveney Smith and the resort's culinary team and the wedding planner's attendance at the resort rehearsal and ceremony.
The fee does not include travel or overnights, although it does award 12,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points that can be applied to room nights, which start at 20,000 points per night.
"The island already had a reputation as being open and gay-friendly," Ms. Coveney Smith said. "It's on the mental short list of places safe to travel. This partnership is building on that."
